On July 1st, 2016 I had the opportunity to shoot a wedding with my friend and fellow photographer, Sharee Davenport at Planet Bluegrass in Lyons, Colorado. This was my first time shooting at Planet Bluegrass and I was so excited to get to photograph at another Lyons wedding venue.
Planet Bluegrass is a stunning Colorado venue that showcases a large rock wall covered in moss, a stream running behind the outdoor ceremony site, a beautiful silo, open space for lawn games and a large building for indoor receptions and ceremonies. Planet Bluegrass doubles as a concert venue that hosts multiple concerts and events such as the annual Telluride Bluegrass Festival. Planet Bluegrass also backs up to another Lyons wedding venue, Lyons River Bend.
Any wedding in Colorado can have unpredictable weather and this day was no exception. The forecast for the day was rain, ranging from 70-80% all day long! For a while we weren’t sure if we would be able to have the ceremony outside. Thankfully, the only rain we got was a sprinkle after the ceremony and the rest of the day had exquisite light with clouds filling the sky. The whole day was perfect; from the breathtaking venue, to the beautiful couple, to the vibrant details they put into their wedding, I had such a great experience and was once again reminded how great it is to be a Colorado wedding photographer.
My favorite part of the day was getting to photograph beautiful couple’s portraits of Mollie and Brandon. We were able to utilize Planet Bluegrass’ stunning landscape to get a large variety of backdrops for the images including the rock wall, stream, silo, and Rocky Mountain view. At one point Mollie and Brandon were both standing in the stream allowing us to capture photos with the gorgeous moss covered rock wall in the background.
As I learned from this wedding, you never know what the weather will be like on your wedding, and weather predictions can be wrong! I recommend that you think about Colorado’s unpredictable weather when looking at wedding venues. What would you do if it was pouring rain? What if there was lightning nearby? Make sure that each venue has a fair amount of space indoors in case there is inclement weather and your ceremony and/or reception would need to be moved. Think of the amount of people you are inviting and make sure their indoor space would be able to accommodate everyone comfortably.
If you are looking to get married in Lyons, Colorado, I would definitely recommend Planet Bluegrass, as well as River Bend and The Lyons Farmette as great options for wedding venues. All of the venues are centrally located just off of Highway 36 and are within a mile of each other, which makes it very convenient while touring. Lyons allows you to get beautiful mountain views and the Colorado experience without the hussle and bussle of Denver, with only being an hour away from the Denver airport.
