Engagement shoots are a great way to familiarize yourself with your wedding photographer and get images for your Save the Dates or to display at your wedding. With my photojournalistic approach that focuses on moments, I shoot for natural looking engagement photos and do my sessions differently than most photographers.
Contrary to a wedding that is a great spot for documentation because of all the moments that naturally happen as the day progresses, engagement shoots are generally centered around posed photos. In order to still capture genuine and candid images, I like incorporating elements that are familiar to the couple. Whether that’s including your favorite Denver winery or local coffee shop into your engagement photos, or bringing along a growler of your favorite beer to your engagement spot, I find that having a familial element to engagement photos makes them more personal and genuine.
I also use movement as a way to illicit more natural looking images. Whether you are walking from one spot to another, laughing at something your partner said, or chatting while I set up my camera, I look for these moments because they are always the images my clients like the most. People want natural looking engagement photos that make them look like themselves, not stiff images that look foreign to them.
And….if you’re worried about feeling awkward or not knowing what to do with your hands, don’t worry! When you are at a familiar spot or in movement, you are much more likely to be yourself than you are if you are asked to pose for the camera.
Just as I approach weddings, I want you to be able to feel the images when I send you the gallery. Regardless of the location, I want you to be able to pick up the authenticity and have candid engagement photos that feel real and true to who you are as a couple.
