When couples ask me where they should have their engagement photos taken, my answer is almost always the same: choose a place that already means something to you. The most beautiful engagement sessions are about telling your story in a place where your relationship has already unfolded.
For Sean and Maddy, that place was Alki Beach. As a Seattle engagement photographer, I’ve photographed countless sessions around the city, but there’s something especially meaningful about being close to the water at a place such as Alki. With sweeping views of the Seattle skyline, waterfront paths, cozy neighborhood cafés, and incredible sunsets, it offers so much more than a beautiful backdrop. It gives couples the opportunity to revisit memories while creating new ones together.
Why They Chose Alki Beach for Their Engagement Photos
Alki Beach is where they spent so much of the early part of their relationship. Long walks along the waterfront, grabbing coffee together, soaking up sunny afternoons, and ending evenings with drinks became part of their story long before wedding planning entered the picture. That’s exactly why I loved this location.
When couples choose places that already feel like home, they naturally relax into the experience. They’re no longer wondering where to stand or what to do because they’re simply revisiting places they already love. Those are the moments that create photographs that feel genuine.
An Engagement Session That Felt Like a Date
One of my favorite things about this session is that we didn’t spend the entire evening taking photos. Instead, we built the session around things Sean and Maddy genuinely enjoy doing together.
We started walking along Alki Beach, taking advantage of the beautiful waterfront and the incredible Seattle views. Then, instead of rushing from one photo location to the next, we ducked into a local coffee shop. They grabbed coffee, chatted, changed outfits, and simply enjoyed spending time together.
Later, we finished the evening with margaritas at Cactus, another place that’s special to them. It felt less like a photoshoot and more like documenting a date night.
Why Activities Make Engagement Photos Feel More Natural
One of the biggest concerns couples share before their engagement session is that they’re worried they’ll feel awkward in front of the camera. The truth is, almost everyone feels that way at first.
That’s why I encourage couples to think beyond simply walking around while I photograph them. Incorporating activities naturally gives your hands something to do, creates authentic interaction, and shifts the focus away from the camera. Whether that’s grabbing coffee, browsing a bookstore, sharing cocktails at your favorite bar, renting bikes, picking up flowers at a farmers market, or simply walking your dog, these little moments often become the photographs couples treasure most.
Instead of posing every second, you’re simply spending time together. The camera just happens to be there.
