Definitely one of my favorite shoots to date, getting to photograph at the Utah Salt Flats was mind-blowing. The second I set foot on the salty ground, I thought I had been transported to another world. The white salt continued for miles and miles in front of me, ending at the hazy mountains in the background. We were all surprised at how few people were there when we went, making it feel like our own private island. It also was extremely quiet, adding another layer of other worldliness.
The Bonneville Salt Flats are located about 90 minutes west from Salt Lake City, Utah, and seem to be in the middle of nowhere. Perhaps it was my excitement for this couple’s shoot, or my impatience, but the drive seemed to take hours! But then all of a sudden the terrain changed completely, and we had this expansive white ground to our right.
We began shooting about an hour before sunset and finished up with some reflection shots right as the light went away. Depending when you go, there can be large pools of water, or none at all. Luckily, when we went, there was SOME water, but only one small pool that we used for some of our reflection shots which turned out to be some of my favorite from the whole evening. I also was able to experiment with the iPhone reflecting technique, where you place your phone under the lens to mirror what is on top.
The Utah Salt Flats are unlike anything I have ever seen and I would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a new adventure. Remember if you go that you are in the middle of nowhere, so bring snacks and plenty of water (especially if you go during the summer). I know I will definitely be returning!
